Hi!
Welcome to my portfolio – or as I like to think of it: my creative archive. This site showcases a collection of my work and contributions from the past few years. I believe creativity doesn’t belong in just one box – whether it’s modeling, painting, or photography. For me, it’s an ongoing journey of exploration. That’s why you’ll find a range of projects here: from 3D asset creation and coding websites with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, to hosting complex D&D campaigns and even designing my own clothing. Each of these experiences has shaped me as a designer, and together they reflect who I am, both creatively and personally.
Now Something about me. I’m Lucas, a 24-year-old Game Art (BA) student at HKU, based in Utrecht, the Netherlands. In my spare time, I love to explore all kinds of creativity: photography, attending live concerts, crafting immersive adventures for my D&D group and ofcourse playing game’s. For the past five years, I’ve worked as a sales consultant in a men’s clothing store, where I help customers find the perfect outfit by listening to their needs and building genuine connections. I really enjoy group projects—there’s nothing I enjoy more than hearing different perspectives and discovering how each person views a problem and comming to a solution.
Timeline.
My journey starts in 2014, when I start working as a paper delivery man. Once or twice a week, I deliver papers around my neighborhood. After doing that for about two years, I start working at one of the biggest local restaurants—Brasserie Park—where I wash dishes. That’s where I first start to really enjoy working as part of a team. You’re never doing it alone, and you need clear teamwork and rhythm so you don’t end up scrubbing until 2 in the night. After finishing secondary school, I apply to GLR for Graphic Design and get accepted. I start learning the basics—shapes, colors, typography, and how to mix all of that together into good design. After the first year, I choose Game Art as my specialization and start working with Maya, Unity, and Substance Painter.
In my third year, I start an internship at SuperBuff in Scheveningen as a game artist. This is where I begin taking on a generalist role, and I learn how to set up VR in Unity. That year, I also learn a ton about working with GitHub, collaborating with the two other interns, and being part of creative meetings. It was super valuable. After the internship, I get a bit stuck. I’m not sure what direction to go in, so I start working part-time at a men’s clothing store while I begin a computer science bachelor at Hogeschool Leiden. Around the same time—during COVID—I launch my own clothing brand: The Monkey Co. It felt great to be designing again and building something from scratch. The first (and so far only) collection sells out completely in just a few months.
After a year of studying computer science, I decide to drop out. It just wasn’t creatively satisfying, and I couldn’t see myself becoming a full-time programmer. But I did start to enjoy and understand code, which has honestly been super useful to this day. I keep working full-time in the store and actually enjoy not being in school for a bit. At Coef, I eventually get trusted with the keys to the store, opening and closing it myself, leading the team, and helping hit targets and goals. It gave me a lot of confidence and leadership experience.
About a year and a half later, I decide to try and get into HKU Game Art. Around the same time, I’m offered a full-time graphic design job at an online fashion retailer—but when I find out I got accepted into HKU, I turn it down. That’s when the spark really comes back. I’m excited to make things again. Now, two years into HKU, I honestly can’t imagine not creating and designing every day. I’ve moved to Utrecht with three classmates and fully feel like I’m back in the design world again. Recently, I started Every Graphic together with a friend I knew from my computer science days. We got the idea to build websites from scratch for small businesses. We’ve had two clients so far and plan to keep expanding!
